I am a Professor of History at California State University San Marcos and the author of Hattie McDaniel: Black Ambition, White Hollywood (2005), Mae West: An Icon in Black and White (2001), and God, Harlem USA: The Father Divine Story. (1992).
Currently, I’m working on several projects: a biography of film censor Will Hays, a study of the African American members of FDR’s New Deal Administration, and a digital history project on Iowa’s Great Pioneer Flood of 1851.
